Silver incuse medallion META /
NEMAK, 2003
OBV: Ear of corn in high relief, META in left side.
R: Incuse block of car engine, NE-MAK on both sides.
“Protest” medal symbolizing the clash between
agricultural and industrial civilization. Comment by Petr Sousek on this
coinage:
“At the end of 2002 I met up with Pavel Franc of the
Environmental Legal Service and heard, for the first time, about a
conflict between private farmers from the Rajtr family with the
multinational industrial company Nemak. At the same time I learnt about
an exhibition of photographs by Ibra Ibrahimovič, who took up the
subject.
The information immediately inspired me to create
special medals in the form of the Old-Greek incuse Stater of the town of
Metapont. I chose a combination of the relief of an ear of grain
representing the ancient and contemporary agricultural civilization and
a stylized industrial artifact – the motor block – produced by the
Nemak company.
The medal is struck employing the ancient technique from
bronze, manually engraved dies. As the archaic incuse Staters were made
of silver, I also chose silver of 990/1000 purity and a double weight of
17 grams and also tin alloy.” |
