Legionary pendant, 2nd cent. AD.

The symbol in the shape of a legionnaire’s boot marked the property and material of the different legions. This pendant having the shape of a boot track belongs to the 10th legion (LEG X GPF = LEGIO X GEMINA PIA FELIX). At the time of Marcus Aurelius the 10th legion, with its base in Carnuntum, was situated north of the Danube, in today’s South Moravia (Mušov and Pasohlávky village). Together with several other legions they were getting ready for a large military campaign on the territory of free Germania and planning to establish the province of “Markomania”. After the death of the emperor the plan was abandoned and the Romans slowly withdrew back to the Danube their influence in the area thus coming to an end.
