Rhodian prosperity in
Hellenistic times was based primarily on the carrying trade and rested
on the strength and efficiency of its fleet. Alexander's conquest of
Asia provided unrestricted access to Egypt, Cyprus and Phoenicia.
Furthermore, the partition of Alexander's empire enabled Rhodes to
reasset its independence. |
